Buying a new home can be a very exciting time. As exciting as this may be the thought of moving out of your existing home and into another can be very overwhelming. If you have lived in your home for a while you have most likely accumulated years’ worth of stuff. Trying to figure out what steps you should take while still focusing on the sale of your home can leave you frustrated. The sooner you can get a jump on the moving process the easier it will be. Here are some tips to help make the transition as smooth as possible.
Make a list of everything you need to do. Knowing what you need to do will help you stay on top of things. If you haven’t moved in a while the list may be longer than you anticipated. Start with what you need to get everything out of your house. How will you store the items you are bringing? Are you going to use boxes and if so how many are you looking at? Once the items are stored how are you going to transport them to your new residence? Is there going to be a gap from when you close that will require you to seek a storage unit? There are plenty of questions you need to answer but before you do anything start with a detailed list of everything you need to do.
Allocate a budget. Moving will require you to spend at least some money on your end. From packing items to moving trucks there are expenses that need to be thought of. You need to factor in turning off old bills and possibly prepaying new ones in advance. You should set aside more money than you think to handle anything that comes your way. If your back goes after a few days of packing you may need to get someone to help with the move. Little things come up all the time. Have a budget in place so you don’t have to worry about them.
Use a calendar. There is a lot going on when you are trying to juggle a closing and a move at the same time. Using a calendar can be a huge help. In addition to exact closing dates you should have an idea of when you need to call for a moving truck or when you can for moving help. You will also need to fill out a change of address form, shut off or transfer utilities or other accounts, change magazine or newspaper subscriptions and call ahead to schedule cable or internet at your new residence. With work, life, family, your closing and a move a calendar will certainly come in handy.
Get the right supplies. The most common method for moving items is in storage boxes. It is frustrating and annoying to start packing only to have fewer items than you need. Before you pack anything make sure you have enough boxes, tape, labels and anything else that will make it easier on you. It is also a good idea to get a marker so you can label everything you are packing. The idea is to make it as easy as possible when you enter your new property.
Moving from one residence to another doesn’t have to drive you crazy. If you take a few simple steps before you start it can ease the transition and make the process that much easier for you.
